iStock International Cozumel: Local TipsCar savings Don’t expect to haggle with local rental-car operators – prices are generally firm; the best way to save money is to call or book ahead online. Tan, don't burn Mexican marine parks – such as the reef around Cozumel – only permit the use of biodegradable sunscreen. Buy it before your trip (make sure the label clearly says “biodegradable”; Mexitan and Caribbean Sol are two brands that are available online), or seek it out in pharmacies in Mexico. Pack a phrasebook Most Mexicans on Cozumel speak some English, but it’s a good idea to know basic Spanish – or be able to point to it in a book – in case of emergency. Take a walk If you’re arriving on a cruise ship at Punta Langosta, no need for a cab – you’re less than half a mile south of the central plaza. Puerta Maya and the International pier, however, are 2.3 miles farther south. Money matters Many businesses in Cozumel quote prices in U.S. dollars and accept that currency for payment, but the exchange rate will rarely be in your favor. Skip the view Hotel rooms in San Miguel that face the sea often come with traffic noise from the busy streets below – so think twice before booking one – it may not be worth the premium.
