Hotel Monaco has a special place in Venetian history as a backdrop for romance. From 1638 to 1774, the property served as the site of the famous Ridotto Pubblico, a public salon where Venetians regularly gathered to catch up with one another and play card games (guests included the legendary Giacomo Casanova who, undoubtedly, charmed more than one lovely young lady under these eaves). Today, renovations have brought a subtle yet contemporary feel to the classic property. Each room is swathed in monochromatic fabrics (most of the rooms veer toward a sophisticated palette of coffees and creams). The location, right off of the Grand Canal and within walking distance from St. Marks Square, is ideal. Request a room with views over the Church of Santa Maria della Salute and the island of San Giorgio. The Ridotto Pubblico may be a thing of the past, but today you can woo your loved one over a traditional Venetian dinner on the terrace of the Grand Canal Restaurant. The Ridotto can also be reserved for weddings or private parties.
